How British Hurricanes Were Armed with Soviet Guns?

During World War II, Great Britain and the Soviet Union cooperated under the Lend-Lease agreement, whereby the British supplied military equipment, including Hawker Hurricane fighter aircraft, to the Soviet Union. These aircraft were then modified by the Soviets to better meet their needs and wartime standards.

Soviet Armament in the Hurricane

The Soviets modified the received Hurricane aircraft by replacing the original armament, consisting of 8-12 machine guns of 0.303 inch (7.69 mm) caliber, with ShVAK cannons of 20 mm caliber and UBS machine guns of 12.7 mm caliber. In the Hurricane wings, one of each type was installed in place of the removed 7.69 mm machine guns. The aircraft with Soviet armament also often had RS-82 unguided rockets mounted.

ShVAK Cannon

The ShVAK (ШВАК, Шпитальный-Владимиров Авиационный Крупнокалиберный) is a Soviet automatic cannon widely used in Soviet aviation during World War II. The cannon was designed by Boris Shpitalny and Sergey Vladimirov. There were two versions of this cannon:

20 mm ShVAK Cannon:

• Caliber: 20 mm
• Barrel Length: 1287 mm
• Rate of Fire: approximately 700-800 rounds per minute
• Muzzle Velocity: 750-790 m/s
• Usage: Mounted on fighters such as the Il-2, Yak-1, Yak-3, LaGG-3, La-5, and others.
• Ammunition: Fragmentation-incendiary, armor-piercing, anti-aircraft shells.

12.7 mm ShVAK Cannon (earlier version):

• Caliber: 12.7 mm
• Barrel Length: 1287 mm
• Rate of Fire: approximately 900-1000 rounds per minute
• Muzzle Velocity: 820-870 m/s
• Usage: Primarily used in the early years of the war before being replaced by the 20 mm version.
• Ammunition: Fragmentation-incendiary, armor-piercing, anti-aircraft shells.

UBS Machine Gun

The UBS (УБС, Универсальный Браунинг Синхронный) is a machine gun developed by Mikhail Yurievich Berezin and used in Soviet aviation during World War II.

• Caliber: 12.7 mm
• Barrel Length: 1000 mm
• Rate of Fire: approximately 800-900 rounds per minute
• Muzzle Velocity: 820-850 m/s
• Usage: Mounted on various types of fighters, such as the MiG-3, Yak-9, La-5, as well as bombers.
• Ammunition: Fragmentation-incendiary, armor-piercing, anti-aircraft shells.

Application

Both these guns were crucial elements of the armament of Soviet combat aircraft during World War II.

• ShVAK Cannon: Its 20 mm version was more commonly used due to its greater firepower and better effectiveness against heavier targets.
• UBS Machine Gun: It was more versatile and found application in various types of aircraft, both fighters and bombers.

How to print accessories from the file?

The product should be printed on a resin printer such as Elegoo Mars 3 or similar from companies such as Anycubics, Phrozen, etc. The minimum resolution needed to obtain a good effect is 4K. The effect will be even better at higher resolutions, such as 8K.

The file should be processed in a program that prepares files for the printer, the so-called Slicer, appropriate for your printer. In the case of Elegoo Mars 3, it is the ChituBox program.

Basic printer and software skills are required to print the product.
