How British Hurricanes Were Adapted with Soviet Armament?
During World War II, Great Britain and the Soviet Union collaborated under the Lend-Lease agreement, where Britain supplied military equipment, including Hawker Hurricane fighter aircraft, to the Soviet Union. These aircraft underwent modifications by the Soviets to better meet their needs and wartime standards.
Soviet Modifications to the Hurricane
The Soviets adapted the Hurricane aircraft by replacing its original armament with more potent ShVAK cannons and UBS machine guns. Each wing of the Hurricane housed one of each type, significantly increasing the aircraft's firepower. Additionally, these modified aircraft often included RS-82 unguided rockets, enhancing their effectiveness in ground attack roles.
Role Transition of Hurricanes
Originally designed as a fighter, the Hurricane proved less effective in that role against advanced Axis fighters on the Eastern Front. Consequently, it was repurposed by the Soviets for ground support missions. The addition of heavier armament like the ShVAK cannons and UBS machine guns, along with the RS-82 rockets, transformed the Hurricane into a capable ground attack aircraft.
Enhanced Combat Capabilities
The modifications made by the Soviets equipped the Hurricane with the necessary firepower to effectively support Soviet ground forces. The transition to ground attack missions, coupled with the addition of RS-82 rockets, allowed the Hurricane to play a vital role in Soviet air operations throughout World War II.
